Cairo, Egypt - In a joint effort to enhance verification mechanisms in peace processes, The Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA), Fundación Acordemos of Colombia, and the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) convened an expert workshop titled “The Importance of Verification: Strengthening Verification Mechanisms in Peace Processes.” from 8 to 9 November, 2024.
The workshop brought together prominent experts and practitioners to share experiences, innovative approaches and best practices to verifying peace processes and agreements, with the goal of fostering long-term peace and stability in conflict-affected countries. The workshop examined various case studies on verification mechanisms, including the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) in South Sudan and the role of regional organizations in monitoring and verifying peace agreements.
Participants engaged in discussions around the challenges and successes of verification mechanisms with a view to draw lessons learned that can help better inform efforts in this area.
In line with the conclusions of the fourth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, the workshop contributes to enhancing South-South exchanges on conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
