Cairo, Egypt – CCCPA--in cooperation with the Egyptian Peacekeeping Operations Training Center (EPOTC), the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), and the UN Police Division--organized the second “UN Police Workshop for Formed Police Unit (FPU) Commanders on the Implementation of the Revised Policies, Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures to Enhance the Performance of FPUs Serving with UN Peace Operations”.
Forty-two serving (and nominated) UN FPU Commanders attended the workshop from 15-19 November 2021. The workshop witnessed the participation of commanders from four different UN Missions namely, MINUSMA, MINUSCA, MONUSCO, and UNMISS, as well as senior UN staff members and personnel.
The opening ceremony was attended by Major General Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, Assistant Minister of Interior and General-Director of the Police Academy; Luis Carrillo, UN Police Adviser; Ambassador Mai Khalil, Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for UN Affairs; Ambassador Ahmed Abdel-Latif, CCCPA Director-General; Major General Tarek Awaad, EPOTC Director; and Minister Plenipotentiary Hesham ElMekwad, EAPD Deputy Secretary-General.
In his opening remarks, UN Police Advisor Luis Carrillo expressed his appreciation for Egypt's leading role in the field of peacekeeping--being the third largest police contributor in UN peacekeeping operations--and for hosting, for the second time, the FPU Commanders’ workshop in Cairo. Furthermore, he thanked the organizers for the remarkable preparation for the workshop and commended the level of training of the Egyptian police personnel participating in peacekeeping operations.
The workshop comes as part of the project on “Enhancing Peace, Security, and Stability in Africa VII”, funded by the Government of Japan through the UNDP, and co-funded by the EAPD and the EPOTC.
